How I Build (and Keep) Momentum: Routines, Rituals, and Mindset Shifts That Changed Everything
Momentum doesn’t just show up one day and stick around. You build it. You nurture it. You protect it.
For me, momentum starts with how I design my day—from the moment I wake up to the way I close out my evening. It’s not always perfect (life happens), but I’ve learned that small rituals and intentional planning can make the biggest difference in how I show up for myself, my family, and my work.
Building Momentum: Start Small, Stay Steady
Momentum is born out of consistent habits—not huge bursts of inspiration. I start my mornings with a few non-negotiables that anchor my energy, no matter what else the day throws at me. Before I even touch caffeine, I step outside for five minutes of sunlight. It’s simple, but powerful. That natural light helps regulate my circadian rhythm and gives me a quiet moment to breathe.
Then I take 10 minutes to check in with myself. I look at my goals, set my intentions, and map out how I want to feel as I move through the day. That tiny pause between waking up and diving in? It changes everything.
Creating Rituals That Stick
Building momentum is also about making it easier to stay on track. That means setting up my life with routines my body and mind come to expect. I’ve found comfort and clarity in bookending my day with ritual.
At night, my routine might include a few pages of nonfiction, 10 minutes of red light therapy, and a short guided meditation. I always clean up the kitchen before bed—future me is always grateful. It sounds simple, but these habits signal to my brain that I’m winding down. It’s not about perfection. It’s about rhythm.
Planning with Purpose
Momentum loves structure. I take time every Sunday (or Monday morning) to look at the week ahead. I map out my non-negotiables, block off time for focused work, and check in with my husband if we need to coordinate anything like childcare or travel.
I’ve learned that having a dedicated workspace also fuels my momentum. I’ve invested in things that make it feel supportive—noise-canceling headphones, a comfy office chair, non-toxic candles, and even curated playlists that help me stay in the zone. It’s about creating an environment where I want to show up and focus.
Protecting the Energy You’ve Built
Once momentum is rolling, the key is protecting it from distractions. I check my email at set times because I’ve realized emails are often just someone else’s to-do list landing in my lap. Same goes for social media—I set windows to scroll or respond, but I don’t keep those apps constantly open.
One of my favorite boundaries? Keeping my phone on Do Not Disturb during focused hours. No pings. No unnecessary interruptions. Just presence.
Celebrating the Small Wins
Momentum builds when you notice your progress. Every evening, I reflect on three things I’m proud of from the day. It could be something as small as making a nourishing lunch or finishing a task I’d been procrastinating. Big breakthroughs don’t come out of nowhere—they’re built on tiny, consistent wins.
When You Lose Steam—Look Up
On the days I feel stuck or off-track, I look to the people who inspire me. Sometimes that’s a mentor, a podcast, or even scrolling through the content of someone I admire. Not to compare—just to remember what’s possible.
When I reconnect with that vision, that energy—it helps me course correct. Because momentum isn’t about being perfect. It’s about remembering why you started, and showing up again.
Want to build your own momentum?
Start with one habit. One small ritual. One boundary that supports your focus. And celebrate it. You’re doing more than you think—and momentum is already on its way.
